While I was talking with the husband about the accident, he revealed to me where the wife was off to in such a hurry when Little Man was run over...she was on her way to the Albany Airport to welcome home Phillip Phillips!! Oh Phillip, if you only knew how much Leesburg loves you! Little Man might not care so much about your music, but you definitely have the support of this small town!
Well, I know it's not his fault, but we have an injury indirectly related to the homecoming of Phillip Phillips. Last night, about 8:45, I received a call from a client saying that his wife ran over her cat as she was backing out the driveway. I met the husband up at the clinic. The poor kitty, named Little Man, was in a lot of pain so we sedated him and gave him some good pain medication. I took an x-ray of him and found he had a fractured pelvis and neck of the femur. I saw no signs of internal bleeding and his vital signs were all good. Fortunatley, I think he is going to make it.

We have all been busy around the office at Leesburg Animal Hospital sprucing things up. We are anticipating Hollywood coming to town and we have high hopes of our name making it on television. Laurel has been busy planting plants in our flower box below the sign and on our patio at the entrance of the office. It looks great! Also, a cute little art student, by the name of Amelia Maxfield, came over and painted our window. It says "Phillip Phillips get our fleas flippin'!" Hopefully that will attract some attention of the AI film team. But you know, now that I think about it, they probably don't even know what fleas are out in Hollywood. Oh well, Leesburg will get it!
Leesburg is gonna look like Woodstock tomorrow. Folks are coming from near and far! Already Dr. Shannon has had friends from her home town of Eufala and her in-laws from Ocilla call and ask for directions and where to go and park. It's crazy! When I drove into work this morning on Walnut Street, tractors were out mowing the grass and tidying up the medians. Everyone is talking about it. I sure hope the weather holds out! Folks, it is the law. In the state of Georgia all dogs and cats are required to have a Rabies vaccine. This vaccine can be only administered by a licensed veterinarian. We have heard numerous stories in the news lately about rabid animals. Last night on the news, a story aired about two foxes trapped and tested for Rabies, only to come back positive. I also recall a few months ago a fox approaching some walkers at Darton. This fox also tested positive for Rabies, and who can forget the lady who was forced to put her dog to sleep because the dog came in contact with another wildlife animal who was later tested positive for Rabies. If only this lady had taken her dog to her veterinarian to be vaccinated, they would still be together.
Rabies is serious business! Vaccine is effective and cheap. I will go out on a limb and say the chances are slim that your animal will catch the deadly virus, but why take the chance? The odds of getting into a wreck on your way to work are slim too, but does that mean you shouldn't wear your seatbelt? The answer is NO! The message is clear....wear your seat belt and get your dog's Rabies vaccine. A Rabies vaccine, at Leesburg Animal Hospital is $17. In addition to the $17 there is an additional $3 County Health Department fee. For this total of $20, you get the vaccine and a Rabies tag with a number assigned to it. This tag serves two purposes. First, it lets people know this animal has been vaccinated for Rabies. Secondly, it is an identification tag. The number on the front is assigned to only your pet. If he is lost, the rescuers of the pet can call our office and we can look up that number in our computer system. If it is not an animal who has been vaccinated at Leesburg Animal Hospital, we can tell you what veterinarian has been assigned that number and point them in the right direction to having that pet returned safely to his home. In addition to all that, we will engrave on the back of the tag the name, address, and telephone number to help in the rescue effort. And to top it all off, if your dog is wearing a collar when he comes in our office, we will gladly secure the tag to his collar. What more can you ask for? How much easier can we make it? So now you have NO excuse to not get your family pet vaccinated! Go on...get 'er done!! (or him) Congratulations to I'll Have Another, the winner of the 138th Kentucky Derby. I did not pick him to win. As a matter of fact, none of my three picks won. One of my picks, Dullahan, did come in third, but that was just not good enough. I noticed while watching the interviews and stories leading up to the race lots of celebrities picked I'll Have Another, simply because of his name. They found it a very fitting name. Of what, I wonder, exactly will they have another? Another pair of shoes? Another chocolate chip cooke? Another designer pocketbook? Diamond ring? More than likely, if Hollywood was speaking, I think they were referring to an adult beverage. So, maybe the horse should have been called Pour Me Another.
I love to watch Thoroughbred racing. It is a regal sport, "The Sport of Kings". The beauty and the athleticism of these creatures is amazing. It takes so much to get a horse prepared for a race of such great magnitude. The Kentucky Derby is just the first jewel, and probably the most coveted, of the Triple Crown. The next race these horses will race in is the Preakness Stakes in Maryland and then on to the Belmont Stakes in New York. Each year I get excited there may finally be another Triple Crown winner, only to be disappointed. It has been 34 years since a horse has won the triple crown; in the 1970's alone there were 3 triple crown winners. The last horse, Affirmed, won in 1978; the previous year, 1977, Seatle Slew claimed all three jeweles and in 1973 the famous Secreteriat ran away with the title. In the 1940's there were four winners and in the 1930's three horses won the triple crown. The first horse to ever claim the title of a triple crown winner was Sir Barton in 1919. So one can see it is no easy task, this triple crown thing. However, I think we are way overdue for a winner. Will I'll Have Another steal the crown this year? Maybe that is exatly what his name implies...he will have another jewel. The first Saturday in May is a special day. For the 138th time, the Kentucky Derby will be run. Who is your favorite? My sentimental favorite is by far the actual favored horse, Union Rags. I particinularly love Union Rags because he is owned by and trained by the same people who owned and trained the great Barbaro. Everyone remembers the exciting 2006 Kentucky Derby where Barbaro blew past all the other horses on the track to win by 6.5 lengths. In the second race of the triple crown, the Preakness, Barbaro was pulled up shortly after breaking from the starting gates. America watched as his right rear leg dangled in the wind. He was rushed to nearby University of Pennsylvania where he spent the next several months undergoing six surgeries to repair multiple fractures in his lower leg and a dislocation of his fetlock joint, only later to be euthanised from complications. The ownes and trainers of Barbaro were so good to the public staying in constant contact with postings of his progress. I just think it would be nice for these folks to have a shot at the Triple Crown, once again, in honor of Barbaro.
Now, having said all that, I find, rarely, does the favorite actually win the Kentucky Derby, so I have made my three picks. I believe my favorites are between Gemologist (9-1) and Take Charge Indy (15-1) and Dullahan (10-1), so if I were a bettin' gal, my trifecta box would be Gemologist-Take Charge Indy-Dullahan. In statistics, Gemologist is pretty high up on the favorite list, but he is in an outside post, which can cause some problems. Take Charge Indy and Dullahan are both ridden by seasoned jockies who have won the Kentucky Derby three times. If the truth be told, any of these 20 horses could easily win. They are all great; if they were not great, there is no way they would be running for the roses on the first Saturday in May. So, put on your best hat and start sipping a Mint Julep and cheer on these fascinating athletes. I pray that each horse crosses the finish line safely. I thought last week was my favorite week for Phillip Phillips, but that was only because we hadn't made it to this week. I loved, loved, loved, Time of the Season for Loving. It was a perfect song for Phillip. I felt like he needed to have some more of a guitar solo, but I realize this is a singing show and not a guitar show and it is paramount he show off his vocal ability to win. Of course he was safe. PP is the only contestant to have never made it to the bottom three. What an honor that is. I feel as though no matter where PP ends up now, he will certainly have a career in music, which also makes me wonder if not winning would be best. I would think all contestants have entered into this show with some legal agreement that if they are to win, they are pretty much "owned" by AI for a certain amount of time. The top 10 folks probably only have to do their tour duties and then are free to any recording company willing to snatch them up.
I was shocked to see Skylar leave, but the truth is, I was kind of happy. I love country music and country music is most often on when I am driving, but Skylar just did not do it for me. I thought of her as more of a controlled screamer. I was afraid Holley was going to get the boot, but I have said to the dentist all along she was one of my favorites, although she was not the best performer. She has a phenomenal voice and just seems to be a sweet, down home, wholesome girl. Someone you would want your kids to be a fan of. And thank you to Jimmy. From the beginning of this show, I have thought Jessica's clothing was way out of her age range. She is a beautiful girl with a cute, skinny little figure, and talent that just oozes out of her skin but I just think her high heels and her tight clothes are not helping her. Maybe next week she will tone it down a bit. As for Joshua, I like him and I think he is a fabulous singer. He is gifted with a great set of pipes, but his style is just not my style of music, so therefore, I don't favor him much, although I do think he will proabably be standing at the end with PP. I think this was my favorite results show as well. Colplay had two stellar performances; the crowd was just going crazy over them, and Carrie Underwood sang and looked fabulous. I really like her new song. It makes me think I may need to download her new album from iTunes. She probably is the AI winner who has enjoyed the most success of all the years it has been on, which is I think 12. I look forward to an exciting week next week as the games continue on. Phillip, may the odds be ever in your favor!! Flea season is no longer coming to south Georgia...folks, it is already here! I can not stress how important it is to get your pet, dog or cat, on a monthly flea prevention. Already Dr. Shannon and I are seeing more than we would like of a condition we call FAD, which is an anacronym for flea allergy dermatitis. It is very frustrating to us because this condition can be helped, if not cured, by simply using a monthly flea prevention. Flea preventions are available in two different forms, topical or oral, and can be made to fit your pet's lifestyle. Topical flea preventions are for animals who are difficult to get to take a pill. It is necessary to be careful of what you bathe the pet in after a topical is administered as strong sopas can wash off the product. The other option in flea prevention is a flavored pill. When giving the pill, pretty much any pet safe shampoo can be used when bathing. However, if the pet in turn vomits or spits out the pill, it will not work on the fleas. For questions on chosing the right flea prevention, feel free to come in and talk to any or our assistants or doctors and we will help you find the right flea prevention for you and your pet. Don't let your pet spend the summer scratching and in misery when it can be so easily relieved. Also, visit our website, www.leesburgah.net where you will find many links to websites on the products we offer.
Don't forget to watch American Idol tonight! Phillip Phillips will be representing Leesburg as he rocks out another great tune. We all are so proud of him at Leesburg Animal Hospital and wish him all the best of luck!! |
