We placed Banks up front in a pen and put his picture on Facebook and in two days we had him a new home. It makes me so angry to know that someone would have let this puppy get into the condition he was in when he was presented to us and then just place the burdern on us. They never called to check on him or showed any concern as to his condition. However, it does lighten the anger when a good soul comes along and gives a little guy like Banks a loving home. The absolute truth is Banks is better off in his new home. I find comfort knowing he knows no difference. He does not have to live with the feeling that someone abandoned him, but hopefully his previous owners will forever feel a bit of guilt.
This is Banks. Dr. Shannon named him Banks for no particular reason; she just liked the name. Banks came to us about two weeks ago as a very sick puppy. He quickly responded to our treatments and made a full recovery, but unfortunately his owners would not return our calls. Banks' owner gave us three different phone numbers, a home, cell and work. The home and cell were disconnected and the work number was an actual place, but when we spoke with someone there, we found that Banks' owner had not worked at this place in two years. It became very evident Banks had been abandoned.

News came about this morning that Ill Have Another will not be running in the Belmont Stakes. His trainer announced this morning he has a left front foot tendon injury and not only will he not race tomorrow, but he is retired from racing.
Some may think he should just chance it and go for it, but it's all about money. Ill Have Another is a stallion and his semen will make his owners much more money than the pay out for Belmont Stakes. Sure it would be nice to have a Triple Crown Winner, especially since we have not had one since 1978, but the millions of dollars he will make by making babies is waaaaay more. Left foot tendon injuries are very common in race horses. Because they run the whole race counter clockwise, the left front foot is their lead food for the whole race and withstands the majority of the pressure. Running in this race could criple him for life and render him unable to race, and worse, unable to breed ever again. The National Thoroughbred Racing Association does not allow artificial insemination, as does other industries, therefore all thoroughbred mares must be bred by live cover. This requires four sound appendages. It would be nice to have the noteriety, but I agree with the owner, managers, and trainers of Ill Have Another...just let him get paid to have sex. What more could a three year old stallion ask for?? Our babymoon went well. We enjoyed a good three days of vacation and beginning Thursday, I attended the Georgia Veterinary Medical Association convention. The GVMA is held annually in San Destin, Florida and is a great little conference for me to get my continuing education hours. It is a relatively small conference and I particularly like it because it gets started early in the morning and finishes by 12:30, so attendants have the rest of the day to spend with family or head to the beach. This year I attended lectures on Cardiology and Renal Failure, so I feel like I have learned some new things to try. It is all very exciting. These little CE conferences are greatly needed to renew my spirit about veterinary medicine.
This conference gets started about 7 A.M. and roughly about 9 o'clock they serve us a breakfast. Stregecially placed are tall boy tables throughout the tradeshow room for "eaters" to stand around and eat. Sometimes it is a little awkward to find a place to post up and eat becuase they are full of other folks you don't know. However, I always have a plan. I love old men. They remind me of my dad, and I know he would love for some young, blonde female to come stand beside him and engage in converstaion. So that is exactly what I do. I look for someone no less than 65, preferably in their 70's and walk over and ask if I can join them. Undoubtedly they say yes. As I was talking with some of these men the first morning, I realized I am very pregnant and I am standing here with no wedding band. My hands started to swell this week and it became so uncomfortable to wear my engagement and wedding band, I left them in my jewelry box. It made me wonder what these old men were thinking. So, I would quickly find a way to mention "my husband" in the conversation just to ease their wondering minds. Not that I fault unwed mother's in anyway, it is just not the way I want to be viewed. Besides, my mother would be humiliated if I let these poor old men think something different. None the less, the swelling is still hanging around. Some days it is more than others, but the wedding band is still in the jewelry box. |
