Prevention is best achieved by reducing contact with mosquitos and vaccinating. Horses should begin their series of vaccines at six months of age with a second vaccine 4-6 weeks later. After the initial series of two vaccines, only one vaccine a year is necessary. It is recommended to have horses vaccinated before mosquito season so antibody levels will be increased during high mosquito season.
