I am missing my normal daily routine, but I am also loving the time I have with my baby girl. Being a mommy has completely changed my life. I do plan to return to work, but this time with her right now is so important to me. I appreaciate everyone's well wishes, messages, support and patience. I know the girls up at the office have it under control. Just be patient with them; it is hard when the whole crew is not there, but I am sure they will take care of all the hairy family members.
Well, our baby girl finally made it here! She is three weeks old today. I had planned to have a post sooner, but things have really changed around here! Our baby girl, now known as Wallace Anne, was born August 8 at 6:59 pm. She weighed in at 7.7 pounds and was 19.5 inches long. Labor was long, 13 hours to be exact, but it was worth it! Many have asked how we came up with her name and the truth is, it has family history. My grandfather, whom I was very close to and passed away my first year of vet school, was named Wallace. Anne is my and my mother's middle name, so we put the two together and will call her Wallace Anne. She has quickly become the apple of my and her daddy's eye!

This belly is ready to bust!! Today is my given due date. Will we get to meet our precious baby today? Oh, I hope so!! It has been a wonderful pregnancy. I have no complaints. Ok, well maybe a few...like nausea and swollen feet and hands (notice the absence of the wedding ring in the picture to the left), but for the most part I have loved being pregnant. I have been overwhelmed by the kindness and excitement shown to me by my clients and friends. The love and support has meant so much, but we are past ready to meet this package! Stay tuned! Thank goodness for the Olympics. Due to parturition being imminent, I have been pretty much been house confined for the past 7 days. The dentist and I have been expecting the arrival of Baby C since Monday. Here it is Sunday and Baby C is still in the oven.
Man oh man have I been grateful the Olympics have been this week. They have made the t.v watching more enjoyable. The talent, athleticism and devotion these athletes have to their sport amazes me. Micahel Phelps...what a phenomenon! Twenty two medals, eighteen of which are gold, is certainly some bragging rights! Gabby Reynolds, the adorable star gymnast, is such a pleasure to watch. She always has a smile on her face and looks like she is just a joy to be around in and out of the gym. But no one amazes me more than Oscar Pretorius, the double amputee from South Africa. I watched him race in the first round of qualifying for the 400 m run yesterday and today he will race again in the preliminaries. He is going down in history just by being the first double amputee to participate in the Olympics and hopefully he will leave with a medal...maybe even a gold! My question is...does anyone "win" the Olympics? I watch the medal counts every night and it is obviously a battle for the most medals between USA and China, with Great Britain in a distant third. But what does that mean? All I know is it makes me proud to be a citizen of the United States of America. Not only are we winners, but we are humble and gracious. I think all of our athletes carry themselves well. When interviewed, they always thank their fans, their partents, and their nation and state how they hope they have represented their country well. To that, my answer is most definitely "YES!" Most of the time my job is pleasant. A usual day in the life of a veterinarian is filled with routine surgeries, preventitive medicine, and mildly sick pets who convalesce quickly and make it back home. We have our fair share of sad cases too. Primarily owners having to say goodbye to a long time family member. Rarely do we have cases of what I would call animal abuse. Last week we had a case, I think, would qualify as animal abuse. Here is the picture. I am not trying to be funny; the truth is this is a case better described as neglect. However, it is my belief neglect is a form of abuse. When one chooses to adopt a pet there are certain necessities which the owner is responsible for providing. Among these are food and water, shelter from extreme weather conditions, a Rabies vaccine and a safe environment. I personally believe what should be added to this list is monthly heartworm and flea prevention and in the case of the above dog, regular groomings.
I realize many people do not want their dogs to sleep in the bed with them or even be in the house with them, and I do not hold that against them. I, however, love to have my animals in the bed with me. Oftentimes the dentist and I have 3 bed visitors. My cat sleeps abovve my head, my Jack Russel sleeps buried under the sheets and our lab sleeps in between the two of us. I don't know what we will do when Baby C arrives and demands some real estate in the bed. But I think that anyone can agree the above picture is unfair. This dog is in misery. If you see a case like this, please report it to the local animal control and let them handle it. We can not let situations like this be ignored. |
