A Home Again microchip is an implant, roughly the size of a grain of rice, placed between the shoulder blades of dogs and cats. To read the microchip a scanner is passed over the shoulder blades to read the unique ID code of the pet. This ID code can then be entered into a database to find the owner of the lost pet. The beauty of the microchip is it is always with the pet. Where collars are often lost or removed, the microchip is permanent. Once placed, the only way to remove a microchip is surgically.
Just this week one of our employee's had an incident with a microchip. Destinee, one of our technicians here at Leesburg Animal Hospital, received a call from a shelter in Maryland. Apparently her cat, Milo, who is currently living with her ex-husband escaped out the back door (where he is pictured above) and picked up by Animal Control. He was turned into the shelter and identified by the Home Again microchip which was implanted six years ago. How lucky this kitty is to have had such responsible and proactive parents. Because of this he was safely returned home!
